Saturday, October 27th 2007.

There's not been much activity on the site from me in the last few weeks, and there certainly won't be much between now and the end of November. There are several reasons for this:

  1. The editing of Shelf Life, the Craig Hinton fan anthology, is drawing to a close;
  2. I've been focusing on a new role-playing game, Don't Panic!, based on The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy;
  3. I'll be writing a NaNoWriMo entry, The Monochromatic Man, throughout the month of November.
In the mean time, Newapocrypha has necessarily plummetted in the wetpaint site rankings. It's a pity, but it's only temporary. I'm sure we'll turn it around over Christmas and the New Year.


In the mean time, we have the Sarah Jane Adventures and November 10th's Children in Need special, Time Crash, to look forward to. Written by Stephen Moffat, it's sadly now referred to only as a scene rather than as a story, which suggests only 5-10 minutes of air-time. With released pictures showing the older Davison in costume sans wig, there's clearly no attempt being made to make him look younger, so I expect continuity forums to be rife with speculation immediately afterwards.


As it's a continuity conundrum Craig Hinton would have relished, I may put something in Shelf Life.

This will be an occasional insight into the mind of the fool who set up the New Apocrypha website as a means of pampering his strange and eclectic obsession with the world of Doctor Who.




Why Psychopomp and Circumstance? Well, its the subtitle of a religio-rom-pol-phil-fan-com novel that I once half-wrote. I say half-wrote because I stopped writing to start a millennial religio-rom-pol-phil-fan-com about three months before the millennium.


Which I didn't finish in time.


In fact, my writing - the obsession which drives me most - has had a checquered history that's often been compromised by one of my other obsessions (usually games design or Doctor Who). Like many, I dabbled with New Adventures submissions in the early 90s, but ultimately shot myself in the foot through my career as a fanzine editor. I backed away from the whole gig before the BBC Books came along - largely because (a) I got sidetracked by family issues, and (b) I earned more money in the day job.



Which brings me to the blog and the wiki. I have a blog elsewhere, and I'm here instead because I hate posting there about Doctor Who if I can help it. As for the wiki, content management has finally caught up with my expectations. Wetpaint allows me to do with a wiki what I did with the fanzines I used to edit in the 1990s.

Now all I have to do is see if I can find an audience.

There is life beyond Doctor Who.

The resurgence of the show and with it the boom in the fan scene takes me back to the 1990s, when my fanzine duties (see my last blog, well over a fortnight ago) became so overwhelming that I had to take a very long break.

Imagine it, juggling a day job and family with the production of between 2 and 4 fanzines per month, co-running a relatively big fan club and, in particular, one of its monthly meeting venues, desperately trying to get your book pitches accepted, and.... anyway, you get the picture.
It was, of course, never meant to be like that. It just creeps up on you and suddenly all other interests are squeezed to one side. This time, its different. A decade on and the world wide web lets me publish more content online than I could ever have imagined back in 199~. It's taken a while, but I've embraced it. Although I've not quite managed growing my audience yet - choosing to put my blog here instead of on a social networking site like Livejournal means people have to actively seek it out, and I've been so busy creating content I haven't stopped to think abut promoting it.



Furthermore, people don't like joining new websites if they can link to their existing one. I'm the same, which is partly why I'm here on a content aggregator site that can pull stuff from other places and can be seen in public, but which needs a little bit of commitment to sign up to.


Fortunately, there's this new thing called OpenID, which both my blog at Livejournal and Wetpaint here are signed up to. If you use a lot of open source or social networking sites, then OpenID allows you to log in to everywhere with a consistent password. So if you do sign up to wetpaint, once you're here you can slip in and out on one identity.



Anyway, this latest entry is a plug for non-Who stuff - the stuff beyond the Blue Box, so to speak.


First up, the Don't Panic! wiki. I'm pretty pleased that in a short space of time I've not just put together a content-rich Hitchhikers' Guide website, but that it hosts an already-playable, near-finished role-playing game which I think captures a lot of the atmosphere of the Douglas Adams universe really well. But then I would say that, wouldn't I?



I'm also toying with the idea of setting up some other interest-based wikis, particularly relating to Octobriana, a favourite character of mine, and maybe one or two completely original things which I shan't reveal just yet (in the old days I would have told you, raised your expectations, and then crashed and burned).

The other news, of course, is why I've been less active on Newapocrypha for the last month: Shelf Life, the fan anthology dedicated to the memory of my friend Craig Hinton, who died on 23rd December 2007. Etiting should finish in early November, which gives me one heck of a challenge to get the book out immediately afterwards.

I've been wondering some more, and had some thoughts and feedback from a few friends on my last post, and its got me reminiscing for the days of my former fanzine, Rumours.

For those not in the know, Rumours was a fortnightly fanzine I edited waaay back (1993-1996), which had a bit of a mixed reputation. Aside from Dreamwatch, I think it was the only news-oriented Who fanzine around. Well, I say news, it was mostly rumour and speculation (and was always labelled as such), and 75% of the stuff reported never came to pass. But the other 25% was pure gold.

Anyway, my blog sparked some gossip and rumour just like the good old days. So I thought instead of commenting in general, it would be nice to just share some new rumours with everybody.


First, that the three-stories in 2009 will be David Tennant's 'departure arc' - three linked stories designed to hand over to the eleventh Doctor. This means (as reported in the press and commented on by DT) that Tennant won't be around for Series 5.




The next bit of rumour is that another reason for the gap. It wasn't just negotiated to keep Tennant until 2009, but also to secure his replacement, who would not be available for filming until... 2009.



This suggests quite a big name, which I think is as it should be next time around. Now the US market has been broken open the next Doctor needs to be someone who can crack it wide open.




The name in the frame?




Patrick Stewart

Now I'd be the first to dismiss Stewart as the fanboy's wet dream, but it does make a good deal of sense. Other than some possible voiceover work for the Wolverine and Magneto movies, Stewart has no longstanding serial commtments. Trek is returning to its roots, and he has expressed no desire to follow the Shatner path of perpetual returns.

Its also interestng to note that a series with Stewart was ITV's knee-jerk response to the return of Doctor Who in 2005.

Both Stewart and Tennant will be at the RSC together which is a great publicity driver for all concerned. Also, Stewart has demonstrated his ability to commit to a serial (7 years of Trek is a major commitment), although with his theatre work and age (he is 67 - in 2010 he will be 70) I'd expect him to negotiate for a less punishing schedule than Ecclestone and Tennant have achieved.

A semi-hiatus and a test of the new arc format with fewer episodes would certainly make sense if someone like Stewart were the Beeb's objective. Think the reality of Doctor Who is that it is the most demanding homebrew show on Television today.

OK, so Russell T Davies said he couldn't see a future Doctor over 40. Well, there are easy answers to that. Davies has lied before for the sake of preserving his plans, and as an over-40 himself I'd struggle to believe that was a genuine view. Also, by the end of Series 4 it looks like we'll see multiple companions - Freema, Tom McInnery and possibly Catherine Tate.

Stewart has gone on record as stating his preference for ensemble productions, and it has to be said that Doctor Who has already gained a reputation as the best 'family' show (although its a long trek down from Yorkshire to Cardiff).

Multiple companions was of course the traditional crutch for older Doctors, and a young healthy ensemble with an older mentor is a proven format, and in a way it has been set up by having the much older Derek Jacobi precede the arrival of John Simm as the Master.
Of course, this is just a rumour. And I still find myself pretty sceptical. Not being ageist, taking on such a demanding lead role at 70 would be a brave thing. Older parts are common for ensemble shows, or pensioner-focused shows, but action-adventure?





The character of the Doctor has been turned into a superhero since the days of William Hartnell, who himself left the role at the age of 58. Without returning to the Hartnellian stereotype, I'd find it hard for the Doctor's alien physiogromy not to be called upon during the course of his adventures.

If the logic of all of this is sound, even if the casting of Stewart is dubious, then it does open things up for who else could be in the frame.

Bill Nighy has been mooted before, but although he's a known face, he's hardly a major draw in the US.

Antony Head has the profile, but his appearance as the Headmaster was much more high profile than, say, Colin Baker's Maxil (not that that would bother Russell), and if the Ripper series wasn't a further obstancle he'd be a good person to have on board if there was a plan to get Joss Whedon on board as the showrunner to take over from RTD.

Alan Rickman again springs to mind - he has cult followings, a history with the BBC, and Severus Snape will continue to be high profile into 2010 and beyond. Rickman is also keep to shrug off the villain stereotype (he hasn't playe one since 1991) and Doctor Who would achieve that for him.

Then there's James Purefoy, who got quite a good profile in the HBO-produced Rome, and it suits the kind of characters he likes to play.

Of course, if Stewart does turn out to be the Doctor, he'll have to do the Yorkshire accent.

Much of his early life is subject to myth and speculation, and the time before he created the Time Lords is known as the Time of Legend. In all of his incarnations he is portrayed as a larger than life character who considers himself to be the highest authority in all things. He is judgemental, quick to anger and uncompromising, but his knowledge and wisdom are rarely challenged.

While official accounts portray him as a wise and benevolent leader, other tales portray a ruthless and selfish dictator who stole the credit for his many artifacts and who exploited the deaths of those closest to him.

History

In Gallifreyan myth, Rassilon fulfils the same role as Moses does in Jewish and Christian literature. He is the wise lawgiver about whom there are many contradictory myths and legends. The son of a suet shredder, no tales of his childhood have yet been recounted, although it is likely that he was born in one of the three minute cities (possibly Onasti). His birth name may have been Rassil Onasti Prydonius, although his rejection of family names during the Intuitive Revelation makes this attribution apocryphal. He may have been born into the House of Fordfarding, where he was brought up alongside his cousins Peylix and Haclav Agusti Prydonius. As one of the four founders of Gallifrey he is attributed with the creation of the Prydonian Chapter.



The earliest stories of Rassilon establish him as a man of great passions (such as when he won his factotum and manservant Thrift as a prize in a marketpace brawl) as well as being a leading scientist and academic who rose to a position of seniority within Gallifrey's scientific elite. This led to him becoming a political figurehead and leader of the Neo-Technologists, who opposed the rule of the 258th Pythia. As such he is credited with bringing the Intuitive Revelation to Gallifrey, replacing a culture of superstition and magic with an age of science and reason.

During the early days of his rulership, Rassilon maintained an office above the west wing of the Academia Library. Like his contemporary Omega, Rassilon was a stellar engineer responsible for a number of time travel experiments which would later form the basis for time lord culture. Together with Omega and another, unnamed hero of Gallifrey, Rassilon presided a ruling Triumvirate. However, as a figurehead for revolution he found himself blamed for bringing the Pythia's Curse down upon the people of Gallifrey, and found his researches diverted into finding a means of preventing his people's extinction.

There are rumours that Rassilon left no stone unturned in his quest for survival, waging against many races and plundering their darkest secrets. Some say he was marked by the Menti Celesti, Gallifrey's Gods, while others believe he became a vampire. Still others suspect that he went mad. Whatever the truth may be, he returned stronger an more resolute, bringing with him the secret of regeneration. He retired from politics to return to his time travel experiments.

Once in power Rassilon took an active interest in architecture, and was responsible for the commissioning of many iconic landmarks across the Capitol. This interest resulted in the creation of a number of hyperdimensional constructs including the Death Zone, the Foundry and the Matrix.

Collaborating with Omega, he developed the technology that would make his people lords of time. In the wake of Omega's death, Rassilon captured and stabilized the black hole that came to be known as the Eye of Harmony, whose energies used to place Gallifrey at the centre of the Web of Time and to grant the power to travel through time.

As the consequences of Rassilon's actions became clear, Gallifrey was plunged into a series of conflicts across time and space. It is uncertain how many conflicts there were, or with whom, but at the end Rassilon decided to took control of Gallifrey again, declaring himself to be the first Lord President.

During this period - known as the Dark Time - many of the Grand Artifacts were created, and Rassilon's disregard for the opinions of others led to political tensions. Rassilon's last folly was known as the Game of Rassilon, in which time-scooped warriors drawn from all over time and space were pitted against each other to fight to the death. It was rumored that the High Council forced him back into retirement. Moving away from the Capitol, Rassilon secreted himself away in the Foundry for many years, where he returned into his research. Here he developed one last piece of technology - the Matrix - before building his own memorial, the Tower of Rassilon. His rare appearances had led many to presume that he was already dead, and when he eventually disappeared a sarcophagus was placed in the Tomb.

Like the Matrix Lords whose home he had constructed, Rassilon's consciousness lived on inside the Matrix, through which he maintained links with successive Presidents and also with the enlightened representatives of the most highly evolved races of the universe. Keeping a watchful eye upon the universe, he continued to exert his influence through various agents that included Shayde and the Doctor.

Eventually Rassilon's continued physical presence was uncovered by the eighth Doctor and President Romana, who also exposed evidence of Rassilon's darker side - of his crimes against the races of the universe now known as the divergents and of the xenophobic zeal he used to ensure that Gallifreyans were the dominant life form in the universe.

In an act of self-sacrifice, the Doctor banished both himself and Rassilon into the Divergence, an artificial universe built to house Rassilon's enemies. While the Doctor managed to return, Rassilon's fate remains unknown.

The Legends of Rassilon do hint at his final doom. It is said that once, long ago, "one mad prophet martyr journeyed too far and saw the Timewyrm. He saw it in a timeline that he could not be sure of, devouring Rassilon or his shade, during the Blue Shift, that time of final conflict when Fenric shall slip his chains and the evil of the worlds shall rebound back on them in war."

Influence

Rassilon almost single handedly established the traditions which were followed by Gallifreyan society since the fall of the Pythia. Perhaps by stealing credit from his peers, Rassilon was largely responsible for his own legend, presenting himself not as the short man he was in reality, but as a giant of great stature whose actions are central to the creation of the Time Lords.



Oaths are sworn in his name, having been corrupted into curses and profanities such as "Rassilon's Death!", Rassilon's Ghost!", "Rassilon's Rod!" and "For Rassilon's Sake!" .



Festivals such as Rassilon's Flag Day (the Gallifreyan festival of liberation from the Pythia's regime) are celebrated, whilst the symbols of Rassilon - the Gallifreyan Owl (his totem animal) and the Great Seal of Rassilon - are revered and represented, along with his visage, in many forms of traditional architecture.

The finest wine on Gallifrey has come to be be known as Rassilons Red, so-called because it may have been his favourite.

His legends have inspired the birth of several Rassilite cults and religions. To the Eremites he is Urizen the Architect – the blind man who measures and quantifies his dung, while deep in the lower levels of the Capitol the secretive Cult of Rassilon the Vampire worships a version of Rassilon who defeated his enemies by becoming like them. Many secret followers of Rassilon act as his agents on Gallifrey, ascending to take their seats among the Matrix Lords when they die.

Another Legend involving Rassilon is that of the Other, a member of the ruling triumvirate also known as Rassilon's Cat. The greatest legend of his legends lies in the mystery of his death, and the belief that he achieved the secret of perpetual regeneration - true immortality unfettered by the restraints of Gallifreyan technology.

The principle behind quantum mnemonics is that the universe can be reprogrammed if you know the right code, but that the code requires processing of such a high order that only the most advanced races in the universe can (a) write it, and (b) memorise it.


Any being that can perceive a mathematical model of the universe in its head is capable of altering its fabric, but performing such a function is a one-time event. Quantum mnemonics are shortcuts that turn the full code into a universal "macro" which can be applied when needed by someone who understands the fundamental principles.




Quantum mnemonics tend to come in three forms - symbolic, mimetic, and oral.
A symbolic mnemonic is a sign or seal known as a vever (taken from the vodun word for a religious sigil). Once scribed the vever is permanent, and can be activated only by someone whose mind is trained to understand the mathematical nature of the universe.



Oral or mimetic mnemonics are embedded idea committed to memory. They are harder to create and more limited in scope than vevers. Those able to create them tend to use words (hence oral) or hand gestures (mimesis) to focus their thoughts, resulting in a single effect which resembles spellcasting.



Quantum mnemonics were created by Adrian Middleton for an unpublished Doctor Who novel, The Fugue, and first appeared in print in the fanzine Apocrypha in 1993. They were used by Craig Hinton in his second novel, Millennial Rites, in 1995. Mimesis was introduced by Lance Parkin in his novel Cold Fusion, published in 1996.



Quantum Mnemonics on-screen

Quantum mnemonics have not, to date, appeared on-screen (having first been used in Virgin's New Adventures), although the Doctor Who story School Reunion by Toby Whitehouse refers to the Skasas Paradigm, which would appear to be the way of thinking needed to manipulate the fabric of time and space (thereby unlocking the power of quantum mnemonics).



Direct manipulation of time and space (albeit inside a black hole) is demonstrated in The Three Doctors, where it is called psychosynthesis. This ability is referred to in the audio Death Comes to Time by Colin Meek as "the power of the fourth".

Block transfer computations, seen in Logopolis, would appear to be the long form calculation for which quantum mnemonics provide a shortcut.

The History of Quantum Mnemonics

Quantum mnemonics were originally used by the Great Old Ones that occupied a previous universe, and were the means by which Yog Sothoth (aka The Great Intelligence) originally transported them into the current universe. The black hole by which they entered the universe is synonymous with the original Azathoth.



The secret of quantum mnemonics was discovered by Rassilon, and was instrumental in creating both the web of time and the Great Seals and Covenants used to imprison the Great Old Ones.

When the Time Lords originally surveyed the universe, they used navigational markers known as tychomnemonic arrays. These devices can, in emergencies, be used to trigger hidden powers that can turn Time Lords into killing machines.

The vevers used to store Quantum Mnemonics are recorded in certain books known to have been available in the Library of St. John the Beheaded around the turn of the millennium.

The Physics of Quantum Mnemonics

Quantum mnemonics have no basis in real science, but represent the means by which an intelligent race can exert its influence upon the nature of the universe (in accordance with the anthropic principle).



Any civilisation capable of understanding and using quantum mnemonics would be capable or a "technological singularity event", allowing that race to shape the laws of the universe to its own ends. They work by triggering a predetermined mathematical formula which must be understood by the user for the mnemonic to work. This formula rewrites the local laws of space and time, but in doing so creates a singularity - a hole in the fabric of time and space. Most singularities created by this process evaporate quickly as their information is synthesized into a new form by the controlling mind (hence the term psychosynthesis).

The race is named after its members’ ability to warp themselves - teleporting themselves or others instantaneously to any point in the universe.


Humanoid in form, the Phaidon were pale-skinned creatures with only three fingers to each hand and four nostrils. Like the Gallifreyans, they were a long-lived species who encouraged the belief that they were immortal. Individuals lived for millennia, allowing Phaidon to forge a major political union known as the Confederacy of the Gulf Worlds.



Like Gallifrey, Phaidon was cursed with a plague of sterility that forced its people to find a means of surviving. They did so by creating the Warpsmiths – four black, armoured, giants.



As the original Phaidon race died out, the Black Warpsmiths secured the future of the Confederacy. They created vast bank of warp batteries that power subdermal warp circuitry, implanting it at birth into a cadre of human-sized clones. This circuitry has made the Warpsmiths masters of speed, teleportation and quantum mathematics, removing the need for conventional spacecraft.



The Warpsmiths of Phaidon are divided into strict castes defined by the colour of their skin – the Red Warpsmiths are artisans and scientists who tend to the hearts of stars and maintain the Warpsmith’s technological advantage; the White Warpsmiths are a corps of warriors; the Grey Warpsmiths are politicians and diplomats, and the Blue Warpsmiths are artists, dancers, painters and bureaucrats.



Millennia ago, one of the Black Warpsmiths ascended to a higher existence, becoming a destructive, god-like entity. In the wake of his disappearance, the other Black Warpsmiths passed into legend, following a destructive quest they know will lead to their destructon.



Back on Phaidon, the Warpsmiths used their great power to enforce a code to lend support to those worlds and cultures less technologically or biologically advanced than themselves. This policy was replaced with one of non-intervention following a major political and territorial conflict with the Qys, a race of parasitic shapeshifters. After four galactic wars, their conflict settled into a cold war that lasted centuries, ending in stalemate during the final days of Earth’s 20th Century. They have signatories in a number of major galactic treaties including the Peace Accord of Dressilius (with the Qys) and the Archetryx Convention (with the other temporal powers of the universe).


Seen as cold and aloof, the Warpsmiths are renowned for their stoic calm, which belies the ruthless efficiency of their martial skills.

Their sun, however, was a neutron star imbued with strange properties, and when their homeworld's orbit shifted, their world was exposed to high levels of radiation, and their nature was forever changed.

In their home galaxy, under the rule of Beep the Most High, the Meeps declared a Star Krieg which resulted in the conquest and slaughter of a thousand worlds. Only when the Wrarth Star Council authorized retaliation did a Star Alliance track down and destroy the Meep Armada at the Battle of Yarras. Since then, most of the surviving Meeps were tracked down and prosecuted for war crimes, but a few survive, relying on their wits and their cute exterior to find refuge all over the universe.

Meeps resemble small, round, furry marsupials with saucer-sized eyes and big pointy ears. They have a thick coat of fur and an innocent demeanour which belies their true nature. They exploit their cute appearance as a sort of behavioural camouflage, and they are easily mistaken for harmless animals. When alone, Meeps refrain from exposing their violent nature, and most fatalities caused result from ignorant but well-meaning tourists who attempt to pet or adopt them.

To date, Doctor Who has been produced for television in three distinct versions:

The classic series, running from 1963 to 1989, lasted some 26 seasons, spanning the adventures of seven different incarnations of the Doctor, played by William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and, finally, Sylvester McCoy.

The TV movie, a joint production between Fox Television, Universal Studios and the BBC, was first broadcast in the US on June 14th 1996, starred Paul McGann as the eighth Doctor. Despite hopes that it might result in the commissioning of further stories, an ongoing series did not follow.

Finally, the new series, launched on the 26th March 2005, introduced Christopher Eccleston as the ninth and David Tennant as the tenth Doctor. With a fifth season confirmed, the series is considered to be more popular than either of its predecessors.

The series spawned 2 motion pictures starring Peter Cushing in 1965 and 1966 and a number of unmade motion pictures and other TV projects.

Doctor Who the Brand

Beyond the small screen, the Doctor Who brand has been successfully exploited in a number of media (two motion pictures plus animations, books, comics, audios, radio broadcasts and webcasts) and across a number of commercial franchises. Throughout its history, the logo used by the current TV series has been adopted by merchandise, although with the launch of a new series in 2005 a new approach was taken. The new series logo is used only to promote merchandise directly associated with the current TV show, while the logo in use prior to the new series has been retained for merchandise making use of characters and situations relating to the classic series and the 1996 TV movie.
