The Wants List
Friday, August 10th 2007.
I've always been someone who gets more enjoyment out of thinking how things could be than how they actually are, and with that in mind I decided to ask myself what, exactly, do I want to see from Doctor Who now and in the future.
Well I certainly enjoy the show in its current form, although on a lighter level than I've enjoyed it before. I actually caught myself getting nostalgic over The Long Game before reminding myself that the new series hasn't really done much in the way of tone-shifting. Sure, they go for different styles of story on-screen, but it all feels so formulaic. I mean, from the hints and my own interpretation of the show so far I'm expecting the return of John Simm as the Master, growing perhaps from the Doctor's hand, which is actually the Master's (he switched it during the 18 months it was in his possession).
True, Donna will be a nice change, as will te Martha/Tom pairing and anyone else that comes along in Season 4, but these aren't the kind of changes I'm on about. I want to see Season shifts that are so noticeable you look forward to them When I look at Spearhead from Space and Genesis of the Daleks and City of Death and the Leisure Hive I see a tangible change of pace and direction that each successive series of NuWho doesn't have for me.
I want Russell T Davies to go out on a high note next year, with a 45th Anniversary Special which acts as a closer on his 'era' (already it qualifies, how scary). Maybe a Three Doctors spectacular with Doctors eight, nine and ten, or maybe nine, ten and eleven, assuming that Christopher Eccleston might be up for guest starring in that way. Certainly I want to see a November special distinct from the series and the NeoChristmas Traditional, and I want it to have Time Lords. I love Time Lords, and I want to see them repeat the Sarah Jane success with an appearance by Leela and/or Romana, just because.
Speaking of Time Lords, a digression. The official Doctor Who website has just posted Series 3 artwork, which includes this:
Its the Time Lord Seal from The Sound of Drums, and its the first time I've ever seen anybody try and do something similar-but-different to the Seal of Rassilon. I'd like to see that updated, but this was more than enough to cheer me up in the mean time, not least of which is because it closely resembles the logo of a fanzine I edited back in the early 1990s.
Anyway, digression over. Its weird having an "I want, I want" post like this, especially when you realise that it is at least possible these days. So what are the top 10 things I want to see? Let me think...
9. - An update or sequel to Pyramids of Mars (ok, I just want to see an actual braincase shaped like a spiral staircase.
8. - Something with Time Agents and Magnus Greel, set in the 50th/51st Century. I'm fed up of it being talked about, I want to SEE it.
7. - A Stephen Baxter story. Hard, hard, clever, adult science fiction.
6. - A Neil Gaiman story with abstract entities.
5. - No more remakes (except maybe The Tides of Time).
4. - A vampire story (I don't even care if Terrance Dicks writes it, maybe a co-write with Paul Cornell)
3. - A well written homage to Douglas Adams's work (as well as being Doctor Who's 45th anniversary, next year will also be The Hitchhiker's Guide's 30th).
2. - An Alan Moore story, preferably involving the Green Man, or Merlin, or Rassilon, or all three. Heck lets just see a revamp of the Tides of Time.
1. - An eighth Doctor adventure in the season's Doctor-lite slot, pre-war, maybe some old style romance.
Not exactly a wish-list, but certainly some food for thought. I'm keen to see someone else come along and change the tone (not Moffat, although I'd like to see him writing more stories) along with a new style for the Doctor. Oh, and a completely new TARDIS set, assuming we get a better glimpse of the interior before it goes.
