Shortly after the launch of a series of Eighth Doctor adventures based on the 1996 TV movie, BBC Books launched a second range of novels almost indistinguishable in format to the existing line of books.

The BBC's continuing series of past Doctor adventures outived its predecessor by less than a year, and lasted for 73 books, starting with The Devil Goblins from Neptune by Keith Topping and Martin Day, and ending with Andrew Cartmel's Atom Bomb Blues.
