With the announcement of a new series of Doctor Who for 2005, the Eight Doctor Adventures and Past Doctor Adventures, both published as paperback series by BBC Books, were phased out in preparation for a new series of original hardback novels featuring the ninth Doctor and Rose. These books were aimed at a younger readership.

In July 1996 the BBC Books imprint was sold to Random House, under whose management the tenth Doctor and Martha's adventures were commissioned.
