A series of 27 audio plays released over four seasons between 1984 and 1987 produced on cassette by Audiovisuals, a not-for-profit fan organisation established by Bill Baggs. The plays starred Nicholas Briggs as the Doctor, and used professional actors, some of whom had appeared previously in Doctor Who. Other notable writers and producers included Gary Russell, Andy Lane, Jim Mortimore and Alan Barnes.

Many of the concepts and stories developed by Audiovisuals were later reused by Gary Russell (who rewrote Deadfall as a New Adventure), Reeltime Pictures (who remade More than a Messiah with Colin Baker) and Big Finish Productions, who reworked Mutant Phase, Vilgreth, Minuet in Hell and Sword of Orion.
