About Newapocrypha

Unlike some wikis or reference guides, newapocrypha is not continuity shy. As well as presenting the core fictional facts as written or performed for television, we will also be presenting information drawn from other media - audios, books, comics, computer games and webcasts. Will also endeavour to address issues such as authorial intent, background material, fanon, metatextuality and unpublished works.

All references will be supported by annotations about their origins, interpretations, and by essays which consider their impact upon the way the world of Doctor Who works. In many cases there will be no definitive answers to the questions raised by the Doctor's adventures, or by the fictional facts presented here. For this reason we will be presenting speculative essays to inform and help users to draw their own conclusions about how the Doctor Who universe fits together.

There have been two official Doctor Who desk top role-playing games, and there have been even more games that beg, borrow or steal concepts and ideas from Doctor Who. In the spirit of openness, newapocrypha supports many of its entries with role-playing articles and resources aimed at encouraging role-players in the Doctor Who universe.

Doctor Who primarily follows the adventures of the Doctor and his peers throughout time and space. Newapocrypha will index, list, summarise and comment upon each of these, as well as other stories set in and around the Doctor Who universe.

Doctor Who is famous for its monsters, and for the alien races its protagonist encounters in his continuing adventures. Newapocrypha will present information about the history, culture, biology and behaviour of the many races known to exist in the Doctor Who universe.

No matter how hard we may try, there can never be a definitive history of the Doctor Who universe. The accuracy of some stories will always be called into question, and contradictions between the Doctor Who in different media will continue to emerge. Instead, apocryphal histories will be presented, providing tailored biographies and chronologies focusing on the different aspects of Doctor Who that pique fans' interests.

With a body of work that spans hundreds of TV episodes, books and audios, the need to a comprehensive listing of characters is key. Newapocrypha will index and comment upon many of the major and minor characters that populate the Doctor Who universe.

As well as people, the Doctor often finds himself confronting governments, institutions, secret societies and religious orders. Sometimes they are there to help, and sometimes to hinder. Newapocrypha will index, list and describe the many organizations that the Doctor and others have encountered during their adventures in time and space.

The Doctor and his TARDIS have visited countless worlds and places of note, both in the solar system, out in the galaxy, and in the furthest corners of the multiverse beyond. Newapocrypha will index, list and describe the many planets and locations that have been visited over the years.

At the heart of Doctor Who is the Doctor's vast knowledge and understanding of the science and technology that populates the universe in the past, the present, and the future. Newapocrypha will examine TARDISes and technologies in all their forms, from sonic screwdrivers to cyberconversion units and metamorphic symbiosis regenerators, describing the many gadgets and systems to be found throughout the Doctor Who universe.

Few attempts to explore the science of Doctor Who have done it justice. In a universe where time travel is a given, and where the laws of physics are constantly being redefined by writers, actors and producers, its important to keep a sense of perspective. Where other science guides might ask how teleporters might work, or how we might one day evolve into life-forms not dissimilar to daleks or cybermen, newapocrypha will look at the relationship between real science and the fictional science of Doctor Who, commenting, challenging and considering the possibilities to foster a better understanding of the way a fictional universe might work.

The Newapocrypha Community

Newapocrypha is more than just a website, it is the hub of an online community which includes forums and sister websites. For more information visit our community page.

The Craig Hinton Legacy

This site would probably not exist were it not for the support and enthusiasm of the late Craig Hinton, to whom the site is dedicated. Craig was an early member of the original Newapocrypha forum, and his frank and collaborative input added real value to the group, building a real sense of community. More to the point, he inspired a crusty old ex-fanzine editor to re-engage with with fandom online, and to throw some of the old enthusiasm into pulling together an unique online website and community.
